Real Madrid unseat Man United as most valuable soccer team – Forbes

first_img(REUTERS) – Real Madrid unseated Manchester United as the world’s most valuable soccer club, according to the annual list published by business magazine Forbes yesterday.Real Madrid, who in 2018 won the Champions League for a third consecutive year, were valued at $4.24 billion (£3.36 billion), up 9% from a year ago, Forbes said.Barcelona were second on the list with a value of $4 billion while Manchester United, who held top spot in the last two years, were third with a value of $3.8 billion.Bayern Munich ($3 billion) and Manchester City ($2.69 billion) rounded out the top five. The 20 most valuable soccer clubs this year are worth an average of $1.75 billion, up 34% from last year, a jump Forbes attributes to sponsors paying more money to attach themselves to these teams.“Soccer team values are increasing because companies continue to increase the amount of money they pay teams for shirt and kit rights, and sponsorships,” said Michael Ozanian, assistant managing editor at Forbes.“Soccer is the most popular team sport in the world and soccer players are running billboards for brands.”last_img read more

Steel Sensations…They’re Terrible

first_imgPittsburgh Steelers inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons lays on the field after sustaining an apparent injury while breaking up a pass in the third quarter of an NFL football game against the Cleveland Browns Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, in Cleveland. Cleveland won 31-10. (AP Photo/David Richard)At 3-3, the Steelers record indicates they are an average team, still alive for all their hopes and dreams. Well, they’re not. They are a horrible football team right now, incapable of beating the Buccaneers at home or the Browns on the road. They’re a team who is playing like one of the worst in the league and it’s time to really start questioning where the issues really are.You have to start at the top. Kevin Colbert must be questioned at this point. There needs to be a microscope on how he’s evaluating talent. The bulk of his draft picks have not panned out over the last five years or so, save a few exceptions; and the first round picks have largely failed to live up to expectations. One must also wonder how he’s assessing talent in his current locker room as it appears he’s decided to pass on need areas over the past few years for some unknown reason. This past draft is a prime example as he passed on grabbing a top Corner in favor of taking Ryan Shazier. I don’t know what type of player Shazier will turn out to be but the secondary is atrocious. Instead, he gave Cortez Allen, who’s a marginal player at best, an extension. The 2013 off season saw him let Keenan Lewis, a top corner, walk away via free agency. What is he doing and why is he doing it?It’s not just Colbert; what are the coaches doing with the players they have? I’m tired of hearing that the players aren’t able to execute the schemes. Well, that may be because Colbert isn’t drafting the right talent but the coaches jobs are to scheme for the talent they have. So if the schemes aren’t working, change them. It’s an indictment on the lack of ability that the coaching staff has.People like to point out that aside from Tomlin, the Steelers have three other coaches on the staff that have been head coaches in the league. That’s true; Todd Haley, Dick LeBeau and Mike Munchak have all been head coaches in the league. All were fired, for their inability to win. So what’s the value there? One thing these guys have proven is they are either unwilling or unable to make any kind of adjustments and the league has not only caught up to them, they’ve passed them, by leaps and bounds. The theme remains the same, big plays aren’t happening, discipline is missing, the talent is lacking, the schemes and game plans don’t change and the Steelers keep getting beaten and beaten badly. With the next two games against the Texans and Colts, the best case scenario is a 4-4 record but don’t be shocked to see them at 3-5 and essentially out of the mix.The bottom line is this, they aren’t good, they haven’t been in a couple seasons and instead of hitting the plateau and heading back up, they are going down and the ship appears to be sinking fast.Mike Pelaia hosts the website Steel Nation Association Covering the Steelers and helping Children’s Hospital All Day Everyday. The feeling that started with just a shampoo ad, is now a support system the Bollywood superstar and the Men in Blue leader have in common. Speaking to India Today, Kohli recollected the first emotions he had towards his better half in the early days.Advertisement Image Courtesy: TVC/PinkvillaThe 31 year old was present in the ‘India Today Inspiration’ hosted by Boria Majumdar,  Indian sports journalist and Consulting Editor for India Today. While speaking about his career’s journey, the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain articulated the support Anushka provides him.“She is someone who has always maintained her integrity, always been a person who does the right thing. When it comes to our relationship, her taking time to come and see me or me taking time to go and see her, it’s understanding. It’s not an effort for either of us.”Advertisement The two tied knots in December 2017, maturing a relationship that came more from comfort rather than attraction.“You know when you come from a middle-class background, these are the kind of scenarios you have seen growing up. There was a lot of comfort factor immediately. The thing that was fascinating for me the most was how relaxed and how chilled out she was for who she already was at that stage.”Advertisement Kohli starred with Anushka in a Clear shampoo ad in 2013, and the decorated Men in Blue batsman also revealed that the commercial brought them close to each other. You know how welcoming and comforting she was and how was approachable she was. Immediately we just really became friendly. I was the one probably fooling around all the time and some of the jokes were really silly but that’s how I am. I love having a good time, you know having a good laugh. And she would really find a lot of things funny as well. We got talking from thereon. I am really glad that shampoo commercial happened.”Kohli will be leading team India in their upcoming T20 series against West Indies, starting from 6th December. Advertisementlast_img read more

Nov. 8 report negative for soybeans and wheat

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Doug Tenney, Leist MercantileWith rains across the Midwest during the last half of October delaying harvest, a common thread of anticipation for this report suggested both U.S. corn and soybean yields would be reduced. The Nov. 8 report was negative for soybeans and wheat. Early gains in corn of 7 cents quickly evaporated. Many traders had also expected China’s soybean imports to be reduced. Various reports in recent weeks have suggested that China would be reducing the amount of protein used in their hog rations. This potential ration change has been discussed for months, it is not new news. USDA put their soybean imports with this report at 90 million tons. Last month it was 94 million tons. The June report estimated China’s soybean imports at 103 million tons.Soybean production was 4.60 billion bushels, the yield was 52.1 bushels per acre, and ending stocks were 955 million bushels. Last month the soybean production was 4.690 billion bushels with a yield of 53.1 bushels. Soybean exports were cut 160 million bushels. Ending stocks were up 70 million bushels.USDA’s corn production was 14.626 billion bushels with a yield at 178.9. Last month it was 14.778 billion bushels and a yield of 180.7 per acre. Corn ending stocks were 1.736 billion bushels. Ending stocks last month were 1.813 billion bushels.Just prior to the noon report, corn was up 3 cents, soybeans down 3 cents, and wheat was up 1 cent. Following the report, corn was down 2 cents, soybeans down 14 cents, and wheat was down 5 cents.Ohio producers continue to fight to get their remaining corn and soybean acres harvested. Rains that came on Monday for many were heavier than expected, already adding to high frustration levels with harvest not yet wrapped up. Across Ohio more rain is expected.Earlier this week USDA estimated the U.S. corn harvest at 76%. The 5-year average is 77% completed. Last year, corn harvested was just 68%. Soybean harvest this week was 83% while the 5-year average is 89%. Last year the soybean harvest was 89% complete. While not report day driven, farmers and many others want the U.S. Farm Bill to get wrapped up as soon as possible. In this fashion, producers can know what to expect. The goal has to be for this session of Congress to complete the Farm Bill. Otherwise, you have a crop of dozens of brand new legislators to be educated on this process. That scenario only drags out the process by months and into next spring. On trade it has already been suggested that with the U.S. House of Representatives now in the hands of the Democrats, they will be equally tough on the trade issues with China.last_img read more

IPL 2011: Rajasthan beat Mumbai by 10 wickets

first_imgShane Watson smashed a breath-taking unbeaten 47-ball 89-run knock as Rajasthan provided the perfect send off to their retiring captain Shane Warne by thrashing Mumbai by 10 wickets in their last IPL match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday. Score | PhotosAfter restricting Mumbai Indians to a modest 133 for five, Rajasthan rode on Watson’s blitzkrieg to overhaul the target in just 13.1 overs and prolong Mumbai’s wait for a confirmed berth in the play-off.It was a stunning display of stroke-play by Watson as out-of-contention Rajasthan got their acts together in time to give a befitting farewell to their inspiration captain Warne. With this defeat, Mumbai now has 16 points and will take on Kolkata Knight Riders on May 22 in their final round-robin IPL match for a place in the play-off.Kolkata too are at 16 points, while Kings XI Punjab have 14 points in their kitty with one match to go.Royals have finished their engagements with 13 points.Chennai Super Kings, with 18 points, and Royal Challengers Bangalore (17) have already qualified for the four-team play-offs and are in the top two positions on the table. It was Watson’s day all the way as after grabbing three wickets for 19 runs, the burly Australian simply tore the home team’s attack and struck six sixes and nine fours.Rahul Dravid, who started slowly before opening out, played the ideal foil to his 29-year-old team-mate, named the man of the match, while making an unbeaten 43 in 32 balls with the help of six fours. The burly Aussie pulled the ball ferociously and also drove it with power when the opportunity arose and treated all the bowlers with equal disdain. Watson’s pyrotechnics saw Malinga ?- MI’s pride and the highest wicket taker in IPL4, bled 42 runs in his four overs.advertisementEarlier, electing to bat Rohit Sharma cracked his third half century in the season to lift Mumbai from a dawdling start.Sharma, who came to the crease when the home team had slumped to 17 for two after four overs, slammed five fours and a six in his 47-ball 58.He was involved in two fruitful stands ? 48 runs with captain Sachin Tendulkar who made an unimpressive 31 in 35 balls and 53 runs in 39 balls for the fourth wicket with Kieron Pollard (20 in 18 balls) – that upped the scoring rate.Watson emerged as the pick of the bowlers for Royals with a haul of three for 19, including the first two, while left arm spinner Ankit Chavan bowled very well and was not fortunate to gain the wicket of Tendulkar in his four overs.Mumbai’s performance was an improvement over their pathetic 94 for eight at Jaipur in their first leg clash last month which they had lost, but the total was still well below their own expectations. The home team struggled to get going after opting to bat first. Royals opened with left arm Chavan and Watson and kept the duo on right through the power play overs at the end of which the hosts were a poor 26 for two.But any hopes Mumbai had of defending the meagre total evaporated once Watson started the mayhem with a boundary hit off Munaf Patel off the second ball of the innings. The Australian then banished Harbhajan Singh from the attack by slamming the feisty off spinner for a couple of huge sixes into the stands at mid wicket.Tendulkar brought in Malinga into the attack to stop the carnage but Watson greeted the Sri Lankan pacer with a thumping drive down the ground to the long on fence.Malinga retorted with a bumper that hit Watson on his neck as he took evasive action and very nearly gave a catch off the next ball with a mistimed pull shot but because of the field restrictions the ball fell in no man’s land and sped to the ropes. The Aussie later escaped a run out effort by Harbhajan Singh who missed hitting the stumps at the striker’s end with Watson scrambling to reach the crease.Having escaped on 29, Watson went berserk against Malinga and pulled the sling-arm bowler for two fours interspersed with a six in the bowler’s second over to help Royals end up with 52 without loss after the power play period of six overs.A cover drive off Dhawal Kulkarni helped Watson complete his maiden 50 in the tournament this season off only 30 balls and laced with three sixes and six fours. He pulled the medium pacer for his fourth six in the same over.Dravid, till then the silent partner in the rollicking stand, also stepped on the gas by smashing Harbhajan Singh for three fours in the off spinner’s second over to maintain the blistering run-rate.advertisementWatson swung Malinga for his fifth six backward of square to hold complete sway over the proceedings as Royals powered their way past the 100 mark in the 11th over. Watson continued in the same vein till the Royals reached the victory target.-With PTI inputslast_img read more

Residents and Tourists Comfortable With State of Public Emergency

Residents and visitors who go to the busiest commercial, tourism and recreational areas in Montego Bay say they have been going about their daily business as usual, as the State of Public Emergency in St. James has had a positive impact on their sense of safety. On Friday (January 19), visitors to the island, tour operators and residents of Montego Bay who frequent Gloucester Avenue and the Sunset Beach were busy with their regular activities. Some tourists even conversed with Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldiers who traversed that thoroughfare en route to the city centre.Joan Jameson of Toronto, Canada, who was on her fourth trip to Jamaica, said she had only learnt that there was a State of Public Emergency after her children called to make queries, as everything appeared normal to her.Nevertheless, she told JIS News that she is looking forward to returning to the island very soon after her current vacation ends.“There are 17 of us here, and we will keep coming back. I would love to live here. The people are so lovely. The climate is fine and everybody has fun. There is never any trouble. It is the most beautiful place we have ever been. The people are fantastic… everybody is so very accommodating,” she said.Tour operator, Denton Martin, told JIS News that tourists are still coming in large numbers to the island via the Sangster International Airport.“There are a lot of tourists on the streets, coming out of the hotels, walking around and enjoying themselves. They are going to the gift shops and doing their shopping just the same. I am not even sure they are aware that there is a State of Public Emergency, because they don’t see anything,” he said.Meanwhile, Shanique McGhie of Rose Heights said the State of Public Emergency is welcome, and she appreciates the presence of members of the security forces.“I think this state of emergency is really good, as it shows that something is being done,” Ms. McGhie said.Donna-rae Dunston of Maroon Town expressed similar sentiments. “I feel safer. I know I can walk out and have my pocketbook and know I’m not gonna get robbed, she said.Part-time University of the West Indies student, Kaben Davis, of Richmond Hill told JIS News that she believes the State of Public Emergency will result in more visitors making Jamaica their place of choice for vacations, “if they see that the Government is putting measures in place to decrease the crime rate”.“I welcome it. I think it is a good move. My co-workers say they feel more comfortable going home in the evenings. The police and soldiers are out at that time and they have no fear… . I am sure, going forward, we will have a positive outcome,” she said.In the meantime, Mayor of Montego Bay and Chairman of the St. James Municipal Corporation, Homer Davis, called on residents who have been declared as “persons of interest” to report to the closest police station.“I am appealing to those persons out there who know that the police have an interest in them to hand over themselves to the police and to probably make life easier for themselves,” he said. “There are 17 of us here, and we will keep coming back. I would love to live here. The people are so lovely. The climate is fine and everybody has fun. There is never any trouble. It is the most beautiful place we have ever been. The people are fantastic… everybody is so very accommodating,” she said.last_img read more

Quebec doctors urged to look out for signs of syphilis in pregnant

first_imgThe Canadian Press MONTREAL — Quebec’s order of doctors is urging its members to watch out for signs of syphilis in pregnant women as rates of the sexually transmitted infection continue to rise. The College des medecins du Quebec says the sexually transmitted infection can have serious long-term consequences for newborns, but that they can be easily avoided with treatment.Spokesman Jean-Bernard Trudeau says some doctors may forget to look out for signs of the infection since it was almost eradicated at the end of the 1990s.But from 2010 to 2015, the rate of infectious syphilis in Canada increased by almost 86 per cent. And while most cases occur in men, Quebec alone reported 172 cases in women aged 15 to 49 in 2017.The province also recorded seven cases of congenital syphilis — or syphilis which is present at birth — between 2016 and 2017, compared to only five for the 15 previous years.Syphilis is often asymptomatic but signs can include a rash or sores in the mouth, genital or anal area. The order says anyone who is concerned about the infection should consult a doctor and get tested.last_img read more

Tony Romo Was A Good QB In An Era Of Great Ones

He’s one of just three with no Super Bowl championships, MVP awards or First Team All-Pro nods, and is tied for second-fewest Pro Bowl appearances. Unlike a Dan Marino or Dan Fouts, Romo doesn’t boast eye-popping production to counter his lack of a championship; he threw for fewer total yards than Jim Everett or Matt Hasselbeck despite being a player during nine of the NFL’s top 10 pass-happiest seasons. The seven active quarterbacks in this group are all slated to turn in at least another full season of stats, which will drop Romo even further behind his contemporaries. Worse yet, players like Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco — drafted in 2008 — are already eclipsing some of Romo’s totals. But things get more complicated when you look at Romo’s rate stats. Within that same elite group, Romo is fourth in adjusted net yards per attempt and tied for second in touchdown rate. His career NFL passer efficiency rating is 97.1, just a tenth of a point shy of Brady’s. Ben Roethlisberger5.102.706.6794.1 Aaron Rodgers6.40%1.55%7.48104.1 Tony Romo entered the NFL as a humble undrafted free agent from Eastern Illinois and leaves a superstar. With his release from the Cowboys on Tuesday and the announcement that he’s joining CBS as an analyst, Romo has completed an incredible, and perplexing, career arc.He started more games for the Cowboys than any quarterback not named Troy Aikman, went to four Pro Bowls and won the Cowboys three NFC East titles. Yet he never quite vaulted above the best QBs of his generation, and his lack of durability and postseason success complicate his legacy.Romo’s undrafted status is often dropped as a did-you-know trivia nugget, but it’s worth pointing out how rarely a talented quarterback slips entirely through the cracks in the draft-industrial complex. Of the 43 quarterbacks who made the Pro Bowl during Romo’s career, only three other than Romo weren’t drafted. Among all four, Romo was the only one with multiple appearances. In fact, Romo is the highest-rated undrafted passer of all time.1For quarterbacks who started at least 50 games. The only two whose totals and rate stats even compare are Warren Moon and Kurt Warner — both of whom have already been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But Romo’s résumé may not be enough for the Hall. Because the Hall of Fame’s selection committee winnows potential candidates over the course of a year’s selection cycle, players are often compared with others from their era who played the same position. And Romo’s career stats don’t stack up well against his contemporaries’.Romo was signed by the Cowboys in 2003 and spent three seasons waiting for an opportunity to play. When he finally did, he took over a 3-3 Cowboys team yet went 6-4 down the stretch, led the Cowboys to their first postseason appearance since 2003 and even made the Pro Bowl. He completed 65.3 percent of his passes, led the NFL in net and raw average yards per attempt and posted an NFL passer efficiency rating of 95.1.That 2006 season would be a microcosm of Romo’s career: a long time spent on the bench, statistical output that rivals the best of his generation, and eventually an underwhelming end. In the playoffs, Romo bobbled the snap on a game-winning field-goal attempt during a wild card game against the Seattle Seahawks, a moment that began a run of playoff futility that none of his peers experienced.Romo’s postseason record, 2-4, matches that of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith’s — and the lightly regarded Smith will not receive any Hall of Fame consideration. Yet in the playoffs, Smith has a better touchdown rate, interception rate, passer rating and adjusted net yards per attempt than Romo.To compare Romo to his competition, I looked at all other quarterbacks who were active last season and who entered the league between 1998 — when Peyton Manning was drafted — and 2005 — two years after Romo was signed. To find the top-tier within that crowd, I then sorted them by career pass yard totals. There are plenty who passed for more yards and won more accolades than Romo. (Although Manning retired before last season, I kept him in for comparison.) Tony Romo5.702.707.0397.1 Tom Brady5.501.857.0997.2 Eli Manning199482004 In the end, Romo spent a decade in the conversation as one of the league’s best quarterbacks. But he was never quite the best — and thanks to the three years he spent on the bench at the beginning of his career and the 27 starts he missed from 2007 to 2015, his passing totals are perilously low to make the Hall of Fame.Unless voters go deep into what Romo did on the field, and look past how many years he wasn’t on it, he may be remembered as good, but not great. Mens Lacrosse Ohio State falls 98 to Notre Dame after Fighting Irishs

Ohio State then-freshman Tre Leclaire maintains possession of the ball in the first quarter against Loyola Maryland in the first round of the NCAA tournament on May 14, 2017 at Ohio Stadium. Credit: Sheridan Hendrix | Oller ReporterOhio State had another chance to rebound from a shaky beginning of the season against one of the nation’s top teams in No. 4 Notre Dame, but the unranked Buckeyes fell 9-8 to the Fighting Irish in another stinging loss Sunday at Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes (5-4) showed promise throughout the game, hoping to end their two-game slide, and even led the Irish (5-2) by one goal entering into the fourth quarter due to a third-quarter goal from senior midfielder John Kelly. But a late rally from Notre Dame powered the Fighting Irish to a four-goal fourth quarter and Ohio State could only muster two goals, leading to its defeat. In the final minutes of the match, the two teams went goal-for-goal, but the Fighting Irish ultimately held on to their one-goal lead and handed the Buckeyes their fourth loss of the season and third loss in a row. “We didn’t get the outcome we wanted and certainly the scoreboard, but I think we improved quite a bit this week as a ball club and we’re going to take that confidence into Big Ten play, understand the importance of conference play as it starts and really try to build on the positives of today even with a loss,” Ohio State head coach Nick Myers said. Notre Dame put up strong performances across the board with three different players recording two goals each. Senior midfielder John Travisano Jr. had a career day and won 17 of 19 faceoffs, giving the Fighting Irish valuable extra possessions. Myers said Notre Dame’s faceoff efficiency was a significant part of the momentum change late in the game. But aside from the lost possessions, he said his team’s quick pacing and offensive set play was important to the team’s development.“Getting more quality looks on the cage was a theme all week for us and I thought for the most part we did a really good job of that,” Myers said.  Sophomore attack Tre Leclaire set the pace for Ohio State’s offense, recording a hat trick three minutes before halftime. He had a game-high five points, serving up two assists and offering six shots on the cage. Three other Buckeyes recorded goals.Defensively, Ohio State redshirt freshman goalie Josh Kirson made his first career debut and recorded 13 saves. In the fourth quarter, Kirson made an important save to keep the Buckeyes in the game when Notre Dame junior attack Ryder Garnsey got up close for what seemed to be a sure goal for the Fighting Irish.  Aside from the tough decision on the field today, Kelly said he felt like the team gained confidence after going toe-to-toe with Notre Dame.“Initially I felt like we were doing some things really well offensively and some things we were working really hard on and getting better,” Kelly said. “I feel like we have gotten a lot better this week but we’ve just got to put some of those other pieces together and connect all the dots.”Ohio State will have a chance to connect those dots when it meets Penn State at Ohio Stadium at 3 p.m. Saturday. read more
