Gunners close in on Debuchy

first_imgArsenal are expected to confirm the signing of France defender Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle on Thursday, and continue to track further new additions. The Wales international is determined to build on those achievements. “I am just happy (with my progress) and I want to keep on working on my game. Hopefully I can keep improving and get better and better. That’s my target now – just to improve on my game and keep on building every season,” Ramsey said on “I have been through a lot in my short career so far. I’ve had a bit of everything so it was nice to have a good season, score the number of goals that I did and be recognised a lot more. “I’ve always believed in myself and what I can do, and I think a lot of people realised that last year and that’s what I’m more happy about.” Following their trip to the United States, Arsenal host the Emirates Cup on August 2/3, which is likely to present a debut for Sanchez as well as a chance for World Cup winners Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil to return following a well-deserved three-week break. Arsenal play Premier League champions Manchester City on August 9 before starting the new domestic campaign at home to Crystal Palace. Following the arrival of Holland full-back Daryl Janmaat from Feyenoord, the Magpies are now happy to finalise the departure of Debuchy, in what is expected to be a £10million deal. The 28-year-old, who was part of the French World Cup squad which reached the quarter-finals in Brazil, will present ready-made Barclays Premier League cover for Bacary Sagna, who earlier this summer left Arsenal to join Manchester City on a free transfer. Manager Arsene Wenger has now returned from his media duties in Brazil as the Gunners step up pre-season preparations ahead of a trip to New York at the end of the month. By then, Arsenal could well have further strengthened the squad following on from the £30million capture of Chile forward Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona. German international midfielder Sami Khedira is one reported target, with sources in Spain claiming Real Madrid are ready to sell for around £25million, although the World Cup winner’s personal terms could prove a sticking point on any potential such deal with Arsenal. Borussia Dortmund’s Lars Bender, who missed the World Cup through injury, is another player Wenger has long admired. Arsenal also need a goalkeeper, with Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina, of Nice, said to be on the club’s radar. Egypt international defender Ahmed Fathi is having a trial at Arsenal this week, while Atletico Madrid’s 20-year-old right-back Javi Manquillo is another a potential new recruit. The Gunners will take a select side to Boreham Wood on Saturday, so those who were not involved at the World Cup could get a first run-out. Midfielder Aaron Ramsey was player of the season last campaign, recovering from injury to help Arsenal win the FA Cup at Wembley. Press Associationlast_img read more

All hail Woods! Trump, Serena, Nicklaus join Tiger Twitter frenzy

first_imgAugusta, United States | AFP |  President Donald Trump and Barack Obama were among those hailing Tiger Woods on social media after his 11-year major drought was ended by a thrilling and emotional Masters victory on Sunday.“Congratulations to @TigerWoods,” tweeted the US president Trump, who played a round of golf with Woods earlier this year. “A truly Great Champion!”“Congratulations, Tiger!” former president Obama tweeted. “To come back and win the Masters after all the highs and lows is a testament to excellence, grit, and determination.”As Woods went on a charge on the back nine at Augusta National with birdies at 13, 15 and 16 to win by a stroke and claim his 15th major and fifth Masters, social media lit up in a frenzy of congratulations.“I am literally in tears watching @TigerWoods this is Greatness like no other,” tweeted 23-time Grand Slam tennis champion Serena Williams.“Knowing all you have been through physically to come back and do what you just did today? Wow Congrats a million times! I am so inspired thank you buddy.”Fellow golfers and former greats of the game were also quick to hail Woods’ achievement in returning to the summit of the sport after multiple surgeries and a string of off-course problems since his 14th major win at the 2008 US Open.Just two years ago his back pain was so bad Woods thought he might never play again, let alone win another major.“Very few people really know what @TigerWoods has been thru to get back to this point,” tweeted four-time major champion Rory McIlroy, who finished in a tie for 21st on Sunday.“So cool seeing him with Tida, Sam, Charlie, Erica and the rest of the team behind 18 green. Couldn’t be happier for him! What a great day for golf!” added McIlroy after an emotional Woods hugged his mother, children and partner Erica Herman after his winning putt.– ‘Simply unbelievable’ – Aged 43, Woods became the second-oldest Masters winner, trailing only Jack Nicklaus who won 46 in 1986.“A big ‘well done’ from me to @TigerWoods!,” said Nicklaus on social media. “I am so happy for him and for the game of golf. This is just fantastic!”Woods also set a record for the longest gap between Masters triumphs, the 14 years since his last win in 2005 eclipsing the old mark set by South African Gary Player who won his second Augusta crown in 1961 and his third in 1974.“For most an impossible task. But not for you,” said South African legend Player on Twitter. “Congratulations Tiger. So special for you and your family. So great for the game of golf. Simply unbelievable.”Other US Sports stars were quick to join in on Twitter. “A big BIG congratulations to @TigerWoods for winning the Masters!!” NBA icon Magic Johnson tweeted. “The roar of the Tiger is back!”“Congrats Tiger! What a performance,” the New England Patriots’ six-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady said.“Greatest comeback story in sports!” said three-time NBA champion Stephen Curry. “Congrats @TigerWoods Let me hold one of those 5 jackets one time!”Woods finally found time to respond to all his well-wishers late on Sunday night.“I can’t thank my family, friends and fans enough for their support. Having my family by my side today is something I will never forget,” he posted on his Twitter feed, @TigerWoods, along with a picture of him wearing his newest of five green jackets.“To not only be able to play again, but to be able to win again, is something I will forever be grateful for.“This jacket sure is comfortable.”Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Zambia calls off soccer friendly with South Africa after xenophobic attacks

first_imgZambia’s national team has called off a friendly in South AfricaSouth Africa vows crackdown on xenophobic attacks after five dieJohannesburg, South Africa | AFP |  Zambia has cancelled an international friendly football match which was slated for Lusaka next weekend against South Africa after recent xenophobic attacks.“This is because of the security concerns, you never know what can happen,” Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) secretary general Adrian Kashala, told AFP. “We want to be sure of the security of (the) visiting team”.Five people have been killed in a surge of xenophobic violence in South Africa, police said on Tuesday, as President Cyril Ramaphosa vowed to clamp down and the African Union, Nigeria and Zambia condemned the attacks.Hordes of people — some armed with axes and machetes — gathered in Johannesburg’s central business district for a third day of unrest directed against foreigners, hours after mobs burned and looted shops in the township of Alexandra, prompting police to fire rubber bullets to disperse them.Five deaths — most of them South Africans — have been reported, police said, adding that 189 people had been arrested. In a video address broadcast on Twitter, Ramaphosa said attacks on businesses run by “foreign nationals is something totally unacceptable, something that we cannot allow to happen in South Africa.”“I want it to stop immediately,” said Ramaphosa, adding that the violence had “no justification.”Sporadic violence against foreign-owned stores and enterprises has a long history in South Africa, where many locals blame immigrants for high unemployment. The country is a major destination for economic migrants from neighbouring Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Others come from much farther away, including South Asia and Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country.Gavin Booldchand, who lives in Coronationville, a low income suburb west of Johannesburg, said he witnessed one of the killings on Tuesday, which was blamed on a Pakistani store owner.“The owner of the shop shot him straight into the face,” Booldchand told AFP. “He didn’t have to shoot the guy like that you know.“People are taking our jobs and stuff (and) it is our country after all.”This week’s assaults appear on a greater scale than in the past, although the full details remain unclear.“They burned everything,” Bangladeshi shop owner Kamrul Hasan, 27, told AFP in Alexandra, adding that his shop gets attacked every three to six months.“All my money is gone. If the (South African) government pays for my plane ticket, I will go back to Bangladesh,” he said. The violence and looting of shops occurred in Johannesburg and surrounding areas.Similar incidents occurred in the capital Pretoria on Monday, when local media reported shacks and shops burning in the Marabastad — a central business area largely populated by economic migrants.– Nigerian anger – The attacks on foreign stores began a day after South African truckers started a nationwide strike on Sunday to protest against the employment of foreign drivers. They blocked roads and torched foreign-driven vehicles mainly in the southwestern KwaZulu-Natal province.Deputy President David Mabuza condemned all attacks on foreign nationals.“We are a nation founded on the values of ubuntu (humanity) as espoused by our founding father, President Nelson Mandela… we should always resist the temptation of being overwhelmed by hatred,” he said in Cape Town on Tuesday.– Sickly economy –The violence erupted ahead of a meeting of the World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town, where hundreds of political and business leaders will gather for three days from Wednesday.David Makhura, the premier of Johannesburg’s Gauteng province, said rioting was not a solution.“This issue can be dealt with without resorting to xenophobia,” Makhura told reporters. “There is no country that does not have foreign nationals.”Opposition parties pinned the blame on the ruling African National Congress.“South Africans are scared and lack real hope for the future,” said Mmusi Maimane, leader of the Democratic Alliance, South Africa’s official opposition. “We are seeing economic and social collapse in action.”Ramaphosa took office after elections in May that he won on a platform of reviving the country’s economy and boost employment. But in July, the national statistics office said joblessness had reached 29 percent — the highest since the country’s quarterly labour force survey was introduced 11 years earlier.Share on: WhatsApp Nigeria summoned its South African ambassador to express “displeasure over the treatment of her citizens” and said it would dispatch a special envoy.Several Nigerians used social media to call for a boycott of South African companies, including telecoms provider MTN, satellite television service DSTV and retailer Shoprite.Separately, African Union chairperson Moussa Faki condemned the violence “in the strongest terms” but said he was encouraged “by arrests already made by the South African authorities”.last_img read more

At the time, she weighed 235 pounds and, at only 5’1”, was unhappy with her appearance, “I was embarrassed to put on the exercise outfit; I was embarrassed to take a class.” In an attempt to lose weight and get fit, Megan began eating healthier and running. Though she was able to lose the unwanted pounds, she injured her left knee in the process. Wanting to continue exercising, but unable to run, Megan found a spinning class and immediately fell in love. After becoming a certified cycling instructor, Megan taught at various studios in Monmouth County. As she became more experienced with cycling, she wanted to  customize her classes, but was limited by gym owners. That’s when Megan had the idea to create her own cycling business with a community feel. She wanted classes to be intense, but appeal to beginners, hard-core cyclists, and everyone in between.Megan is extremely excited about the move and all the new things Megacycle will offer, “We hope the new Megacycle will appeal to a broad range of people who want to be fit and have fun doing it in an easy, open atmosphere.”last_img read more
