Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that Los Angeles County was likely to become eligible to move out of the current, most-restrictive “purple” tier and into the “red” tier as soon as Friday, as the state was expected to meet its goal of vaccinating 2 million high-risk Californians across the state. The vaccination goal was recently linked to reopening guidelines, allowing the process to accelerate once met.“Red” tier status allows for increased activity including indoor dining at up to 25% capacity and limited reopenings of movie theaters and gyms. Schools would be eligible to open for in-person instruction through 12th grade.But even once the region becomes eligible for the loosened restrictions of the “red” tier, any policy changes will have to come from local health agencies, such as the Pasadena Public Health Department.A determination was yet to be made Wednesday as to whether Pasadena would choose to keep any more stringent policies in place, Derderian said.“We are reviewing the latest information and will hopefully make an announcement (Thursday) regarding the specific guidelines,” she said.Officials at the L.A. County Department of Public Health were also sorting out exactly how they would respond to the expected new tier status. County guidelines were expected to be released Thursday.Officials said vaccine eligibility in the agency’s jurisdiction was expanded Wednesday to include custodial and janitorial workers, public transit workers and airport ground crew workers, along with social workers who handle cases of violence and abuse, and foster parents providing emergency housing for young people. The Pasadena Public Health Department reported 5 new COVID-19 infections and two additional deaths on Wednesday, city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said. The deaths had occurred previously, but were only just added to the city’s data. The new figures raised the city’s overall totals to 11,003 known infections and 322 deaths. Over the prior week, Pasadena recorded an average of 7.7 daily infections.At Huntington Hospital, officials reported treating 30 COVID-19 patients on Wednesday, with eight of them being housed in intensive care units.According to the latest figures available, 38,408 Pasadenans had received at least one dose of a two-vaccine regimen, and another 22,349 had received both doses. The county reported another 119 COVID-19 deaths. The new deaths lifted the countywide death toll from throughout the pandemic to 22,213.Another 1,514 cases were announced by the county, although L.A. County Director of Public Health Babara Ferrer said that number included a “few hundred” cases attributed to a reporting backlog. The new cases raised the cumulative pandemic total to 1,206,713.According to state figures, there were 1,056 people hospitalized in the county due to COVID as of Monday, with 309 people in intensive care. As of Friday, 2,415,460 doses of COVID vaccine had been administered in the county. That includes 814,593 second doses, representing the number of people who have been fully vaccinated.State health officials announced 6,412 new infections and 226 new deaths on Tuesday, bringing the statewide totals to 3,513,678 COVID-19 cases and 54,621 fatalities.The state’s average positivity rate over the prior week inched upward to 2.4%, while the 14-day average was recorded at 2.3%.As of Wednesday, L.A. County accounted for 34% of California’s COVID-19 infections and 41% of the state’s deaths.City News Service contributed to this report.Related:Newsom Confirms LA County Likely To Move To Red Tier By Friday STAFF REPORT Pasadena’s ‘626 Day’ Aims to Celebrate City, Boost Local Economy Get our daily Pasadena newspaper in your email box. Donegal man begins Dail ‘hunger strike’ against abortion

Jordan: Conference was ‘best ever’

first_img The 2010 Leadership Conference at Troy University Feb. 5 and 6 was, in the words of event chair Catherine Jordan, the best ever.Jordan made the evaluation at the close of the 9th annual Leadership Conference and those around her were quick to agree.“This conference has been especially outstanding because of the quality of the presenters and their willingness to be accessible to the participants,” Jordan said. “The presenters stayed around and mingled with the participants. That made a difference because everyone felt such a part of the conference, not on the outside.” Email the author By The Penny Hoarder Skip Book Nook to reopen Troy falls to No. 13 Clemson The keynote speaker for the General Closing Session at noon on Saturday was Tim Reid, Emmy-nominated actor and director who is, perhaps, best known for his role as Venus Flytrap in the popular television sitcom, “WKRP in Cincinnati.”Reid told the conference participants that, as a teenager, he was a hoodlum. But he turned his life around because of the influence of a noble grandmother and his association with Dr. Martin Luther King.He challenged he audience participants to be involved in their communities and to do the best they can at whatever it is they choose to do in life. Enrique fit for season opener

first_img All will have to work extremely hard to fill the gap left by Luis Suarez’s departure for Barcelona but Enrique sees no reason why they cannot match last season’s second-placed finish. “Everyone says about Luis and of course Luis was a top player for us, one of the top players in the world,” said the Spaniard. “But we’ve spent a lot of money on good players as well, we have a very good team. Hopefully we can do the same thing as last season.” One advantage for Liverpool may be that the former Southampton trio are all experienced Premier League players. “It depends on the player but normally (it’s an advantage),” said Enrique. “It’s a different league, a completely different type of football. This one probably is the hardest in terms of fitness because in the Premier League you run a lot, going wide and back more or less all the game. “Of course if you are used to this league, normally you do well. That doesn’t mean that a player that comes from another league can’t do well as well, but it is more risk.” Strength in depth is key for Liverpool this season as they return to the Champions League for the first time in five seasons. Enrique, whose only trophy with the Reds was the Capital One Cup in 2012, cannot wait to make his debut at Europe’s top table. He said: “Liverpool has been for a while without Champions League. “I’ve never played in the Champions League and I’m so excited to play in this competition because the best teams in the world are in this competition. I think Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world so Liverpool have to be there as well. “We’ll try to go as far as we can but of course not forget about the league and the two cups. We have a big squad and we want to compete for everything. “Hopefully, like the manager says, we can win a trophy. We won one before with Kenny (Dalglish). I know it wasn’t a Champions League or a league title but it was really exciting and for the fans it’s really good to win trophies.” Press Association Jose Enrique has declared himself available for Liverpool’s opening Barclays Premier League match against Southampton a week on Sunday. The Spanish left-back made just nine appearances last season before undergoing knee surgery in November that brought his campaign to a premature end. He resumed training in July and enjoyed some playing time on the Reds’ pre-season tour to the US. Speaking to Press Association Sport at Liverpool FC Members’ Family Day, Enrique said: ” I’m feeling good. “I was training on my own and running a lot, and it’s not the same when you play with a team because it’s a lot more with the ball and a different type of running. “I’m still getting my fitness back but I feel really good and confident that I can play soon. “It’s little by little, and not just me, everyone is getting their fitness. If the manager wants me to play in the first game of the season, I am ready of course.” Enrique’s fitness is a boost to boss Brendan Rodgers, who was left without a specialist left-back last season and has not been able to strengthen in that area. The Reds have been heavily linked with young Spaniard Alberto Moreno but so far he has stayed with Sevilla. Rodgers has still been busy in the transfer window, spending significant money on Southampton duo Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren, Belgium World Cup star Divock Origi, Benfica’s Lazar Markovic and Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool fan Rickie Lambert was another player to leave Southampton for the Reds while right-back Javier Manquillo has joined on loan from Atletico Madrid. last_img read more
