We may be headed down that route again.Tuesday night, Sports By Brooks reported that sources tell him that Auburn booster Jimmy Rane is “targeting” Stoops to replace Malzahn if the Tigers don’t win the Iron Bowl this year.Stoops is slated to be one of the head coaches in the XFL – for the Dallas Renegades – this coming spring.Stoops took over as head coach at Oklahoma in 1999 and stepped down after the 2016 season. He won one national title (2000) and 10 Big 12 titles in his span with the Sooners. Stoops played at the University of Iowa and grew up in Ohio, and he doesn’t have any connection to any SEC schools. That said, Auburn is a great job, so who knows.Stoops is 59 years old – so he definitely has some good coaching years left, if he wants to return. But he’d have to get back in the swing of things when it comes to recruiting. We’ll see if Stoops responds this time around. The Iron Bowl is still over two months away.last_img read more
