Accessibility Grants Available

first_imgCommunity groups, not-for-profit organizations and municipalitiesinterested in making their facilities more accessible to personswith disabilities are being encouraged to apply for provincialfunding under the Community ACCESS-ability Program. “Since 2000, we’ve helped fund more than 200 projects that havehelped Nova Scotians with disabilities to more fully participatein their communities,” Service Nova Scotia and MunicipalRelations Minister Barry Barnet said today, Feb. 1. “Thecommunity organizations we’ve supported are helping to make NovaScotia a more inclusive society and we are proud to have workedwith them.” Past projects have allowed organizations to install elevators,automatic door openers, wheelchair accessible washrooms, rampsand specially equipped swimming docks in buildings. “Theseprojects have helped make community halls, libraries andrecreation facilities more accessible to all Nova Scotians,” Mr.Barnet said. Under the program, the province contributes $2 for every dollarraised by the project sponsor, to a maximum of $10,000. Donationsof labour and materials can be included in the sponsor’s share,making it easier for municipalities and community organizationsto raise their portion of the project costs.
